Whether you only have a few days to spare, or you’re looking forward to an extended holiday getaway with family and friends at your side, Yellowstone is a welcoming, scenic, and always exciting place to explore, discover, and enjoy. Whether you have a passion for wildlife, incredible hiking trails, fishing, or charming in-town entertainment too, there’s something just for you in this area. The following 4th of July in Yellowstone guide is a great place to start when you’re looking to make the most of every moment you’re here.

Participate in the Annual West Yellowstone 4th of July Community Celebration

If you’ve booked your welcoming accommodations in West Yellowstone during your 4th of July stay, you’ll be in the right place to participate in the family-friendly annual West Yellowstone 4th of July Community Celebration. The fun kicks off around 1:00 pm on the 4th with the opening of the holiday farmers market on the lawn of the Museum of Yellowstone. Locals and visitors alike gather here to browse incredible local produce and handcrafted goods that make for great personal buys, or gifts for family and friends back home.

Afterward, you can head over to the historic Union Pacific Dining Lodge at 220 Yellowstone Avenue and savor the moment at “Pie on the Porch.” Make sure to bring your appetite because the homemade slices of pie served up here by bakers from across Montana are set out at 1:00 pm and dished out until they’re gone. It’s just $5 per plate and proceeds go to good causes and charities throughout the region. Next up on the West Yellowstone 4th of July Community Celebration is the Buffalo Chip Chuck from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm. This is hosted at the Pioneer Park baseball diamond and is a one-of-a-kind fundraiser where proceeds from the opportunity to enjoy chucking buffalo chips go toward supporting the local Library Foundation.

There’s free music in the park starting at 5:00 pm and starting at 6:00 pm, celebration participants will want to make their way downtown to enjoy the annual Yellowstone 4th of July parade in style. Be sure to bring a chair and settle in as this holiday experience includes horses, bike riders, floats, music, dance, and plenty of candy for little ones to collect as well. 7:00 pm marks the start of the Wild West Yellowstone Rodeo at the local rodeo grounds just 6.5 miles west of town. Of course, the highlight of the community celebration is sure to be the impressive fireworks display which is always set off around 10:15 pm and is best viewed from a place on the grass at Pioneer Park.

Local Fireworks Regulations to Note

Visitors to West Yellowstone over the 4th of July are more than welcome to set off their own fireworks while they’re here, but there are regulations you’ll want to keep in mind. The designated timeframe for discharging fireworks in town is between noon and 11:00 pm on July 3 and from noon until midnight on July 4. Fireworks are prohibited from being discharged in any portion of the surrounding national forest, parks, state recreation areas, or highways and cannot be set off within 100 feet of a church, clinic, or local business. Downtown is off-limits for fireworks as are City Park, Grizzly Park, and the Historic District. You’ll also want to make sure you’re setting off fireworks more than 200 feet from propane tanks. Questions regarding fireworks regulations this time of year can always be addressed to City Hall.

Explore the Local Trails

Your 4th of July in Yellowstone vacation is a chance to lace up your boots and head out to enjoy some of the beautiful local trails in good company. Once you have your water packed and sunscreen applied, you’ll want to take time to check out routes like the Rendezvous Trail, and the Riverside Trail which are easily accessed from town. The Rendezvous trailhead is found at 520 Obsidian Avenue and the Riverside Trail can be enjoyed from 21 Boundary Street.
