The summer holidays are always a joy to celebrate, but by the time Labor Day rolls around, you may be tired of the heat and humidity and are already looking forward to cooler days of fall, making a Labor Day escape to West Yellowstone the perfect adventure for you. The temperatures begin to drop, the days grow shorter, and although the leaves have not yet begun to change (that starts in late September) you will smell the scent of fall in the air, often in the form of pumpkin spice everything that make their first appearance during this last holiday of the summer. You’ve already determined that Sweet Home Montana offers the only places you will want to rest, relax, and revel in luxury and comfort, so now let us give you an idea of what you can do during your West Yellowstone Labor Day escape with this guide to the top must-do holiday activities!

Keep Track of the Wildlife you See in the Park
There is a lot to do in Yellowstone National Park, but the most popular activity is spotting wildlife. They even have a phone app, Yellowstone SPOTR, lets you keep track of all the animals you come across as well as providing maps of where many different species like to hang out. Your wild adventures in Yellowstone will be more fun as you spot moose, bison, deer, wolves, and coyotes, being sure to stay a safe distance away as you photograph the sight and remember to mark down which species you spotted on the app!
Take a Hike
The weather will be perfect, the sun will be shining, and you will find yourself wanting to be outside as much as possible, making a hike through the park or along the trails that traverse our gateway town a much-loved activity. The Fairy Falls Trail is a favorite among hikers of all skill levels, offering a 4.8-mile out-and-back trail that, as you might have already figured out for yourself, leads to Fairy Falls, a waterfall whose waters spill into Fairy Creek, which lies 200 feet below. Mostly flat, this trail is somewhat accessible, but wheelchairs and strollers may need all-terrain tires.
See Old Faithful
Did you know that there are nearly 500 geysers in Yellowstone National Park? Or that out of that number, there are only 6 that experts can predict their eruption schedule, with Old Faithful being the most predictable? In 30 years, there has only been a change of 30 minutes between eruptions, making it one of the top bucket list viewing items for travelers to Yellowstone and one of our top must-do activities over the Labor Day weekend.
Cast Your Line
Fly fishing is big in this part of the world, and you can choose to do it alone on the Madison River, known for offering an abundance of fish and providing many sections where you can walk and wade, the preferred manner of fly fishing. If you are unsure of your fly fishing skills or want to know the hot spots where the fish bite the most, there are plenty of companies around town that offer guided trips and Fly Fishing Clinics.

Attend a Play
The Playmill Theater, located at 29 Madison Avenue, has been performing every summer since 1964, but this year will be its last in West Yellowstone, and Labor Day weekend will offer its last performances. And although it makes us sad to say farewell to the theater and the talented actors that play there, they aren’t moving far, just about 28 miles away to the lovely town of Island Park in Idaho. If your Labor Day getaway isn’t scheduled until Labor Day 2026, you will still be able to see a play, you’ll just have to experience a short road trip as well. For those visiting this year, however, there are 3 family-friendly shows being performed on Saturday, August 30th: Bright Star, The Little Mermaid, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, perhaps introducing your youngest travelers to their newest obsession, that of a live play!
