Sometimes the best gift you can give yourself is the gift of time. Time to do nothing, time to relax more, and time to play harder, and when the new year comes around, time to enjoy the quiet of a beautiful winter day! The serenity found in a landscape blanketed in snow, the peace found while snuggling with your favorite person in front of a roaring fire, and the quiet after a long three months of joyous but chaotic holiday celebrations is also a gift you can give yourself. This is why we at Sweet Home Montana have created this guide to a New Year’s stay in our West Yellowstone rentals, offering a vacation getaway that is the perfect reset and the ideal way to start out the next 12 months of your life.

A Unique Way to Celebrate the End of 2025

Your New Year’s visit doesn’t actually have to start at the end of 2025, but if you are going to be here on New Year’s Eve, one of our favorite traditions is watching Old Faithful erupt for the first time in the new year! It will be cold, and the West Yellowstone entrance will be closed to wheeled vehicles, but this popular activity often signifies the best way to start the new year!

Of course, your favorite NYE activity may be staying home watching the ball drop in New York City, and our state-of-the-art televisions will offer crystal-clear screens that will make you feel as if you are on the sidewalks of the Big Apple, watching every performance live. You will be much warmer, and cozier, however, especially with a fire crackling merrily in the fireplace.

Resolve to Relax

We all are guilty of making long lists of resolutions for the new year, resolutions that make us feel slightly ashamed at how quickly we leave our resolutions behind. Our resolutions here at Sweet Home Montana, however, are ones that we want to follow all year long, and if you are wondering at the magic of that statement, it is simple.

We resolve to do the things that make us feel better about ourselves. We promise that we will take more naps, eat to spoil ourselves (not to just fill our bellies) and to relax as often as possible and that mindset can be something you experience when you visit Montana in January. Resolve to sleep in late every night, to sit by the windows at night, sipping hot cocoa as you watch the snow fall during a winter snowstorm, and to play more board games with your children. This slower pace will fill your energy coffers and prepare you for a return to real life that may not be anywhere near as calm as a winter night in West Yellowstone will be.

Time to Play

Even though it is cold outside, you will still want to play outside as much as possible, especially knowing that the cozy warmth of our seasonal sanctuaries will be awaiting you at the end of every adventure. As responsible adults, none of us really get enough time to play, but on vacation the story changes, and our Montana winters offer many wonderful activities to keep you entertained and engaged.

Ice skating and sledding in Pioneer Park are just two of our favorite winter activities, with the ice rink adding romance to our adventure as we skate hand in hand with our partners, the deep black Montana sky hovering above us as we glide around on the ice. Another popular winter activity in West Yellowstone is cross country skiing (also called Nordic skiing). The Rendezvous Trail System provides a large number of groomed trails you will be eager to explore. Finally, the angler in your life will be thrilled to experience ice fishing, with many local fishing guides offering ice fishing experiences that will never be forgotten!

Serene and Quiet

No one is saying that Thanksgiving has to be church-hush quiet, but after years of spending the holiday with all your extended family, including the hard of hearing Uncle Henry, you are more than ready for the quiet serenity you find in our homes. Maybe you will start each morning with a cup of coffee, sitting at the dining room table, looking out onto the vast Montana landscape blanketed in snow. (Yes, snow season has already begun) Maybe you will end each night with a glass of wine, and all the lights off, letting the glow of the fireplace light up your night and making you thankful for its warmth, its romance, its beautiful flames. On the big day, the hours in between morning and night will be much noisier, but nowhere near as noisy as previous Thanksgivings have been, and as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade plays on our state of the art televisions, your youngest child keeps running to the windows exclaiming over the snow, and the first scents of turkey roasting and stuffing, well, stuffing, waft throughout the house, you will know that you are experiencing a family adventure you never want to escape from.

The Kitchen Your Feast Comes From

Not everyone will want to spend this day of thanks chained to the stove, but there are many travelers who find cooking and baking fun and stress reducing, and for those wonderful people, we present kitchens that are the heart of the home. Large appliances are modern and updated, counter space will be extensive, ensuring that you have enough room for all your favorite family dishes, and in some, you may find wine refrigerators, ensuring your wine will be chilled, without having to use up precious space in the refrigerator. (You want those leftovers!)

Not Feeling the Urge to Cook?

West Yellowstone is a small town, and most restaurants will be closed so the staff can be home with their families, but there are a few choices open, including Hanks Chop Shop. Located at 221 N Canyon Street, Your Thanksgiving dinner will be delicious, inexpensive and quirky due to its surroundings. Hanks was formerly an auto garage, and there are still mementoes of those days lingering, including a rusted out old Ford out front and an entire casino in the back!

Their Thanksgiving menu is a simple one, offering turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, stuffing, rolls, and pie, and if they stick with last year’s prices, all of that will only cost you $25 per plate! The best part of eating out at Thanksgiving is that someone else will be cooking, serving, and clearing away the meal; all you have to do is eat and enjoy.

Family Moments You Will Never Forget

Like everyone else in the world when you count your blessings, it is the people who are closest to you that top the list. Your family is your world, and we at Sweet Home Montana are thrilled that we can provide the backdrop to a family vacation filled with beautiful moments and all the happy laughter. Our properties come alive when you and your family reside within, and whether you are watching the parade on Thanksgiving morning, fighting over the last piece of pumpkin pie, or are continuing your family tradition of reading Christmas stories aloud on Thanksgiving night, every moment will be the ones you never forget.

Maybe this year will be the year you celebrate while soaking in a hot tub under that vast Montana sky or maybe this will be the year your mother finally decides to hand over the family recipe for the best stuffing in the world. It doesn’t matter how you fill each and every moment spent at home with us, it just matters that you are spending it together, creating more memories and making more stories to tell over the dinner table for years to come!
